BT Global Services: UK International Trade Programme
Launched by HRH Price Charles in November 2011 this programme opens up opportunities in the United Kingdom for small South African ICT businesses. The successes of the annual International Trade Programmes far exceed any regular trade visits, and it is the only programme that introduces South African entrepreneurs to global opportunities. To date:
- 48 entrepreneurs have taken part in the UK visits
- More than half of the entrepreneurs have signed contracts to trade, and all these relationships are in place and growing
- All the small businesses that have benefitted from the programme have grown in employees, revenues and profits, and not a single one has closed down.
In June 2014, South Africa’s High Commissioner in London invited the MEDO team and three beneficiary entrepreneurs to present this programme as the flagship entrepreneur development programme in South Africa. A reception at South Africa House in London was arranged and over 60 UK business heads attended. BT Global Services, DTI and MEDO partner on this programme as an outcome of the DTI-sponsored Youth Incubator in Maboneng, opened by Minister Davies in 2013. National Trade Programme
MEDO runs a National Trade Programme catalysing the growth of small businesses in South Africa. When a MEDO beneficiary reaches the stage where expansion beyond a city or province is possible, the National Trade Programme is the answer. Supported by Tsogo Sun and Comair, the team is able to get entrepreneurs traveling on business for the first time by removing the barriers to expansion. All the entrepreneurs need to do is prove that the business travel is required and that the appointments are confirmed for the support to kick in.
